CONAKRY, Guinea — Guinea’s Supreme Court validated Alpha Conde’s victory in a presidential race considered the country’s first democratic contest, but which was tainted by the ethnic divide it exposed.
Mamadou Sylla, the court’s president, said Thursday the ethnic Malinke-backed Conde won with 52.5 percent of the vote. His opponent, Peul-backed Cellou Dalein Diallo received 47.5 percent of the vote.
“I declare Alpha Conde the new president of the Republic of Guinea,” Sylla said. “The decision of the Supreme Court is not susceptible to change and irrevocable.”
